Two Holiday Categories
Hong Kong has two categories of public holidays:
Statutory Holidays - These are required to be given to all employees under the Employment Ordinance.
General Holidays - These are days that banks, educational establishments, public offices, and government departments are obligated to observe as holidays under the General Holidays Ordinance.
General Information
- When a public holiday falls on a Sunday, the following Monday is a public holiday.
- Normally, people will maximise their holidays by taking annual leave around general holiday dates to minimize their annual leave entitlement.
- It used to be the case that shops were shut during Chinese New Year whereas now with Hong Kong being a popular city for tourists, shopping malls, high street shops, bars, cafes and restaurants are usually open.
- Check / book ahead for any paid-for attraction especially if you intend to visit on a statutory or general holiday.
- Every Sunday is a holiday too.
